Hiring a Bar Mitzvah DJ: Taking The Shine Off Of Those Glossy Brochures
Filed Under Religion | Comments Off
Joe Pachino asked:
Regarding a Disc Jockey’s full color mail-out brochure, does High Gloss = High Cost? Not necessarily. And very often, the opposite is true.
It’s not a certainty about the one you may receive, but national printers sell professionally designed, glossy brochures to DJs by exclusive territory and classification (Wedding, Corporate, etc.) and simply plug in each local DJ’s logo and phone number. The descriptions and photographs are usually generic! Those same partygoers sure get around.
You can tell by noting if specific DJ information is found on the front and back covers ONLY. Is it sneaky? Is it credible? Does it matter? Should you care? You decide. It’s not the end of the world, it’s just another DJ sales technique, or it may indicate an agency.
If you choose to speak with an agency and bypass discussion with the DJ who will perform at your party, you’re walking on eggshells. So watch your step!
Agencies subcontract a crew of DJs (keeping a liberal amount of the fee for booking them). A benefit agencies promote is that they’re able to provide a replacement in the event of an emergency. OK, so? Although they stress the fear factor to favor themselves over an individual, an emergency isn’t probable. You’re not booking an insurance policy. Besides, all decent single operators network too, and can offer the same assurance.
So is it money well spent? Remember the old Wendy’s commercials: “Where’s The Beef?”
What else do they offer? If you’re hiring a “name” who works exclusively for the agent, that’s fine. But if you’re getting a guy from their stable, find out who’s been assigned to your party. Does he favor a tuxedo or a backwards baseball cap? Even if the agency has been around for years, he may be newly trained or hired last week. You’re spending big $$$…buy experience!
If the agency won’t allow you and your assigned Disc Jockey to speak together without the agency as an intermediary, assume the worst and walk away. Quickly. The DJ will be more frank and/or you’ll be able to judge his experience (or lack of experience) without Big Brother watching (or listening).
At a large catering hall which divides into four separate banquet rooms, I recently ran into a local booking agency’s DJ as we were both unloading our equipment for different affairs. He came in to check out my set-up and did everything but drool. I walked into the adjoining room and saw his “gear.” It looked like a DJ starter kit from Circuit City. Actually that’s unfair to Circuit City. Make that Toys-R-Us. (You know something? It’s almost unfair to Toys-R-Us, too!)
He volunteered to me that the agency was paying him a $35 per hour fee. Here’s a fellow who was content to go home with $140 in his wallet that night (before taxes). Is it any wonder that he couldn’t afford a professional system?
Anyone who’s been around for a while wouldn’t pack up his vehicle for $140. The key is that the agency booked the job for $400 (”Return Your Contract Within Ten Days And Receive A Special Discount From Our Regular $500 Fee”). Of course, what the customer ultimately received was an $140 Disc Jockey, not a $400 (or $500) DJ. Please note: This one example may not be typical and it’s certainly not meant to impugn respectable and reputable agencies, of which there are plenty. But, it is not extreme.
What do you think would have happened if this DJ received a last minute phone call from Agency “B” for a job that would pay him $250 cash that evening? It’s obvious. He’s a mercenary and a likely no-show nightmare for you. Re-read that last sentence.
And if Agency “A” subsequently fired him, so what? What’s Agency “A” going to do? Take him to court for $140? He’s a subcontractor out for himself with no vested interest in the agency. Nor is he indebted to you. He’s never even spoken to you! He doesn’t have a conscience. What he would have is an extra $110 in his pocket for the same amount of work. But where would that leave YOU?
Be aware, not wary hiring through a booker. Do they have office space or handle everything over the phone? Can they offer advice regarding invitations, photographers, light shows, dancers, sign-in boards, prizes and party favors? They’re a bargain and worth the extra expenditure if they assume the full burden. I want to be clear: many agencies are conscientious and exemplary. If you’ve gotten personal referrals–perfect! Dump it all in their lap. If not, PLEASE request professional references. Not glossy brochures.

How to Make a Grand Success of your Party
Filed Under Music | Comments Off
Sarika Kabra asked:
Having seen the basics of selecting a good DJ, let us examine some more of the multitude of options on offer. Here is part two of how to select the right disc jockey for your get-together.
Single Unit Disc Jockeys: A single unit disc jockey is a one-man show who is in the business for the sheer pleasure of making good music. An aspiring professional less the flashy wherewithal, he may well be the answer to your needs if you are looking for a low-cost affair.
The single unit disc jockey you hire may have simple equipments but may well have liveliness and vigor to put life in the party. On the flip side, the use of much simpler studio equipment may result in their not having enough back up of the songs required. Then as they are not professionals they may be comparatively not so responsible. While you may end up saving a few pennies here, it is best to try out the competence of such a person before you hire him. Ask him for references or a trial performance before you make your final decision.
Yellow pages, Friends or Relatives: It is the easiest way to know about the disc jockey but then again it is your luck as everyone has his own choice. Of course, from the yellow pages, you can get the telephone numbers and the addresses of the DJs but then you have little idea about the better ones!!! Do not get disheartened as we have a solution to this also. Here are few tips to keep in mind while talking to them
a. It is important to create a rapport with the Disc Jockey over the phone. Take notice of their way of speaking and approach - after all it depicts their style and personality which is a part of their profession.
b. Are they returning your phone calls? Were they prompt in doing so? This again shows proficiency in their field and their approach towards work.
c. Enquire about the equipments they are using. Check up if he uses his own studio equipment to mix his own music or he uses premixed music. This can give you an idea about the talent of that person.
d. You also have to check whether they have digital music recording or normal recording. This is likely to affect the quality of the music produced.
e. Ask for the list of songs they would play on that day. It should match the occasion and the type of guests invited.
f. One of the most important things to check is whether he fixes his dance floor and the quality of the lighting used. Additional expenses may be avoided if these facilities are provided by the Deejay. Most do, but it always better to be sure.
Make the best of this knowledge to get the right man for your wedding function. After all, it’s a very special occasion and you would like everything to be memorable and absolutely perfect!

Make Money Using Race Models For Jockeys To Find A Winner At The Horse Races
Filed Under Horse Racing | Comments Off
Bill Peterson asked:
Many racing services now offer jockey statistics that show certain jockeys have their strengths and weaknesses. The jockey who is successful with sprinters on the dirt may not fare so well with routers on the turf. Other jockeys just seem to handle younger horses better.
But is there any other way to exploit the human element when it comes to the riders? I say there is and it is one that is often overlooked. I once bet a horse in a turf race that was racing on the inside. It looked like the horse had good tactical speed, coming out of the sire Silver Hawk, and it was a first time turfer. I handicapped the race and figured the horse would get a ground saving trip and be in striking position on the rail near the end of the race.
The jockey was a good rider who had a good win percentage so it looked like all systems go. Because the horse hadn’t raced on turf before, many of the players laid off it so the odds were very generous. The race started and played out exactly as I thought it would. My horse was on the rail with only a few tiring horse sin front as they went around the final turn. A hole opened up on the rail and the horse lunged forward, but as it did, the jockey started sawing on the reins trying to pull it back. This startled the green horse and the more it pulled the more the rider pulled back violently sawing away at the reins.
The horse began swaying and stumbled a little, nothing serious, it was just thrown off stride a little but stayed on its feet and kept trying to get through the hole. At that point the rider leapt off the horse. I had only seen a rider actually leap off a horse one other time and I think that rider wanted to make sure the horse lost. In this case, I think the rider was afraid to go through the narrow opening.
The rider walked away from the incident, no worse for the wear and the horse shot through the hole and won the race, but of course, without the jockey it was not awarded the win. The lesson was that the jockey would not take a horse through a tight spot. As I watched her more and more I realized she really needed an outside lane to win race or an opening you could drive a truck through.
I would play her if she had an outside post position, but never if I thought she would wind up on the rail or behind a wall of horses. I still think she is a good rider, but I also know her limitations. By watching jockeys and knowing their quirks, you may find situations where a good jockey will not win. Some jockeys love to skim the rail while others are rail shy. Some are good with an outside post while others can’t handle it. Knowing which jockeys are in the right position or have the horse with the right running style is one more way to make money on horse races.

The Pros and Cons of Becoming a Disc Jockey
Filed Under Music | Comments Off
Sarika Kabra asked:
Want to be a disc jockey? Learn a few details about the life of a disc jockey before you try your luck in this field. This article will give you a glimpse into the actual job of disc jockeys. Their lives may seem to be full of fun but they also need to work very hard. If you really love music and want to be surrounded with music all your life, you may fare well in this job, but even then you may have to make many tough choices.
For one, the money may not be that great in the beginning. Since, this is such a niche profession, there are certain known names in this field that are requested for time and again. Thus, to make your own mark, you have to be creative and different. Disc Jockeys can play for clubs or for radio stations.
Disc Jockeys not only need to be aware of music software to carry out music mixing but also must be able to interest the audience with their small talk. This is particularly true for radio disc jockeys. They have to be able to hold the listener’s interest by interspersing good music with smart one-liners or other interesting programs. They have to not only carry out music recording but also be good talkers.
The specialty of disc jockeys in night club is that they must be able to download music that is trendy and then present in a way that gets the crowd grooving. They need to play the latest and most happening music and do it in a way that is sensitive to the dancers’ requirements. The job is certainly not an easy one as most disc jockeys have to work very late hours and may have to face a lot of isolation due to the nature of their job. Moreover, there is not a very huge market in small towns and to be successful; they have to move to urban areas for more options.
The job of disc jockeys is often considered to be very lonely. They have to be all by themselves, mixing music in small sound proof rooms. When working for radio stations, radio jockeys may not only have to be involved in music but also in keeping the listener’s interest alive by interviewing the public and hosting other talk shows. They have to be very highly in tune to the latest issues to be able to chat while playing music. They have to keep track of the time and co ordinate music, talk show, requests and commercial breaks. They have to be well prepared with spicy and interesting tidbits and organize the whole program.
Moreover, disc jockeys needs to be able to work with all the recording software and even learn something about studio equipment. They have to adjust sound and music and have erratic working hours. Since the radio stations are on air 24 hours in a day, the radio jockeys need to be called anytime of the day and must be always prepared. They must have good speaking voices and good grasp of the language in which they broadcast.
So choose this profession only if your passion for music is strong enough to overcome all odds that you may have to face as a disc jockey.

I.i.p.m Business School - Guest Lecture - Radio Jockeying: the Art and Science of Effective Communication
Filed Under Education | Comments Off
Kartik asked:
This is what the Guest Lecture program at IIPM aims to achieve, whereby, the institute presents locally and internationally prominent speakers from a diverse field covering general management, advertising, journalism, social science, etc. They are invited to share their work and ideas with the student community, thus providing insights into contemporary professional practices. Their practical instances give our students an insight into the changing corporate world and means to adapt to these changes.
A Guest Lecture Session by Radio City’s Supernaa Chadda
Ms. Supernaa Chadda, celebrated Radio Jockey-turned-producer on Radio City (FM 91.1) recently delivered a guest lecture session with a selected few students from the UGP batch (2006-09). The topic for the lecture was, “Radio Jockeying: The Art and Science of Effective Communication.”
Ms. Chadda cited examples from her experience (she had been a leading radio-jockey-cum-voice over artist) and pointed out how one can create an impact on the minds of the audience, even when speaking over the radio. She explained the students how an one-to-one communication is different from a one-to-many communication over a mass-media network.
“It is a real challenge… even if we are speaking on the radio, we still need to maintain a common rapport with every individual listener, so that the listener never feels cut-off from the entire program,” pointed out Ms. Chadda.
She illustrated how content, spontaneity and voice modulation plays a major role in making one RJ stand out from the rest, which thereby helps in creating a distinct brand identity for him or her (like Ulta Pulta Nitin or Delhi ki Mahek, etc.).
Ms Chadda pointed out that the general audience ranks a radio station’s success based on the Radio Jockey. He/she becomes synonymous with a program or a radio station and in certain cases, they are also hero-worshipped, as listeners tend to get influenced by those charming voices that mesmerize them at any particular time of the day. This makes the RJ’s responsibility even tougher, as they should be really thorough with what they speak, keep a neutral stance and be politically correct. “They can always express opinions but can never take stands as it could hurt the sentiments of people,” she commented.
During the speech, Ms. Chadda also discussed a little about the infotainment industry and the ongoing revolution in the mass-media sector. She even explained how a Radio Station works, what are the various departments involved in packaging a program (from developing content for the same to the individual responsibilities of various people involved with a specific program), amongst other key issues.
Students kept on interacting with her, unraveling various secrets of radio-jockeying. Ms. Chadda played some voice-overs from her collection, helping the students understand the importance of voice modulation.
At the end of the session, the audience was not only well-informed with the art and science of radio jockeying, but was even more excited to have got a chance to chat with “Simply Supernaa” live!!

I want to be a jockey?
Filed Under Horse Racing | Comments Off
Elfie asked:
I love horses and I really want to learn how to be a jockey. but I have heard that you have to be less than a certain wight and height. Is this true? I am 5 foot 6 inches and about 130 pounds. Am I to tall? And is there anything against girls being jockeys? I am athletic (I love running) and I have a lot of patience with horses and I absolutely love riding. I think it would be thrilling to race, but I don’t know where to start. Any advice?
